Vieques Tourism

by Marie
(New York, NY)

My mother was born and raised in Vieques and I have been traveling there all of my life. However, after the Navy left the island, tourism boomed to an extent i had never witnessed before. I think it is kind of childish that tourism only thrives once the malicious Navy abuse stopped. I wish that the new tourist are informed of the true nature of the island's history and do not simply view my family's precious homeland and a hip and chic location to vacation.

It is sad and frustrating to see all the energy the local folks still have regarding the US military presence on Vieques. If only they could harness a small fraction of that energy to restrain themselves from throwing all their garbage out the car while driving around on their "precious homeland" island!
