Isla de Vieques is unlike many other destinations on the Caribbean. Vieques has no casinos or golf courses. Tourists come to Vieques to see the Caribbean the way nature intended it to be, and in order for you to experience all this island has to offer having a car rental is highly recommended.

Driving around Vieques is truly an adventure and attraction on it's own. There are many beaches that are only accessible by car, preferably a jeep. Many publicos (public transportation) will not drive to these areas which in my opinion are the most beautiful on the island. Some beaches may take you as long as 10-15 minutes to get there from the road entrance because the roads are not paved. Besides getting a car rental, you can opt to rent bicycles, scooters, or if you are an avid hiker you can walk the trails.

The roads in Vieques are narrow, they may seem as if they are a one lane road, especially the roads on the hillsides on the interior of the island, THEY ARE NOT! So please drive slow, take your time, enjoy your beautiful scenery.

Pùblicos / Public Transportation in Vieques

If you are arriving to Vieques by Ferry or the Vieques Airport, it is not necessary to reserve a publico (taxi). During the times of arrivals usually there are publicos ready to take you to your destination.

The drivers are very friendly, and they know the island very well. They can be a great source of information for great places to eat, great beach spots and great deals on the island. Most speak English, but don't be afraid to try "un poquito de Español" (a little Spanish).

Again, be advised that It's a good option of transportation if you are going into the towns of Esperanza or Isabel Segunda.

When you call, you can choose to share a ride, which is how locals use publicos. If you choose not to share a ride, you may have to pay the full fare.

COSTS
The fares are very cheap and they are regulated. Fares can range from $2.00 per person, to $5.00.

You can call the drivers and have them pick you up at a specific time. Note: If you share a ride, know that you may not be the first to be dropped off, so give yourself some extra time if you have to be somewhere at a specific time.
