Vieques
Isabel Segunda
Pueblo (main town) of Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico
On the north coast of this beautiful island lies "el pueblo" (capital) of Isabel Segunda. This pretty town is surrounded by a magnificent coast and filled with colorful homes populated by friendly residents.

Isabel II is a town with old-fashioned charm and rich history. This small town is the home to the last Spanish fort built in the Americas. Isabel Segunda is the main shopping district and the home for the ferry, which travels to the town of Fajardo in the mother island of Puerto Rico. Come into town for some great "comida criolla" (traditional food) and pastelillos (traditional pastries filled with a variety of fruit fillings).
If you happen to arrive to Vieques by the ferry, you will first notice El Faro Punta Mulas (lighthouse) sitting at the top of the hill, leading, shining, and welcoming you to our Isla Nena. The alluring turquoise waters and colorful town will make you anxious to get off the boat and begin your exploration.

From afar, you may notice El Fortin Conde de Marisol sitting proudly at the top of the hill watching over the town. El Fortin houses a museum that tells the story of La Isla Nena.
As you approach the dock, you will notice colorful fisherman's boats along the coast which blend in with the colorful houses in town.
Pùblico (public transportation) drivers are await to offer friendly services to travelers needing a ride to their destination.
The crowd around the dock when you get off the ferry, is the most people you will see at one time during your entire stay in Vieques.
When you get off the ferry, if you happen to walk around to the passengers waiting area, you may find fisherman coming back with their catch of the day and divers returning from their adventurous day in the waters. Watching this scene made me realize just how little you need to live happily.
The first thing you will see when you drive by the center of Isabel II is the charming plaza. In Puerto Rico, you will find a plaza in the center of every municipality. This is a place for friends to gather and for elder men to congregate and play dominoes. By the side of the plaza is located the catholic church of the town.
Surrounding the plaza there are some small shops and "La Alcaldia" (mayor's office).
The Tourism office is located right next to La Alcaldia. Stop by the office during the first days of your stay.
The ladies at the desk are very friendly and informative, they will be able to answer any questions you may have and help you plan your stay. The town of Isabel Segunda is filled with little, cozy, and colorful homes accentuated by the bright yellow sun.

Among all the beautiful places in Puerto Rico, I find beauty in the cemeteries also. (No I am not fascinated with the dead). If you never visited a cemetery during your visits to Puerto Rico, you should during your next one.
You will find bright white statues that are true works of art, they are usually surrounded by bright silk flowers. The blue ocean and sky around the cemetery are the perfect backdrop for these works of art.
If you take a little walk around Isabel Segunda, you will pass by beautiful old churches with beautiful doorways. Homes with rustic gardens with steps that lead you to balconies with magnificent views. See vines of plants with flowers that have grown to love and embrace the homes of this town with old-fashion beauty and charm. You will also find remnants of the fight of Viequenses to stop the U.S. Navy's practices on the island. Painted beautiful murals that depict the pain and wishes of their people.

Last but not least, I have to mention " align="Left">I hope you take some time off from the beaches and get to know this little town with much charm, color and warmth.
