Publicos will take you anywhere on the island but will not transport to the more remote beaches. I am sure you will be in a rush to get your hotel/ vacation rental, but I encourage you to ask the driver for a short tour of the main spots on the island that way you get an idea of distances to places and how to plan your vacation in Vieques.

I have stressed the importance of a car rental but by no means is it necessary for a good time in Vieques. There are plenty of accommodations in the town of Isabel Segunda and Esperanza near El Malecon area where you can walk to various beaches and restaurants.

Where to Find a Carro Publico

When you arrive to the Vieques ferry terminal or airport, there will be publicos ready to take you to your destination. Publicos also circulate around the towns of Isabel Segunda and Esperanza around El Malecon where most restaurants are located.

Costs of a Publico in Vieques

The fares are very inexpensive and they are regulated. Fares can range from $3.00 - $5.00 per person.
You can choose to share a ride, which will lower the cost. If you choose not to share a ride, you may have to pay the full fare.

Arranging Transportation with a Publico Driver

You can call the drivers and have them pick you up at a specific time. Please note that If you share a ride, know that you may not be the first to be dropped off, so give yourself some extra time if you have to be somewhere at a specific time. If they agree to take you one of the less traveled beaches in Vieques, make sure you arrange for a pick up time or have a phone number handy. Also be advised that you may not get cell phone reception in some of the more remote beaches in Vieques.
