Volted Beauty
Don’t let the name scare you… you won’t get electrocuted, but it sure is a unique sight you’ll likely not find any other beach you visit.
Playa Voltios is on the north east of the island. The feeling is rugged and natural just like we prefer it, many natural gems from the ocean wash up on the sand like grass, pebbles, some sea glass, dead brain corals : ( and you’re likely to find a friendly dog that’s astray and in need for a loving friend.
Playa Voltios is a quiet stretch of sand, offering silhouettes scenic views of the main island of Puerto Rico, and the sister island of Isla Culebra. Visit this beach for an interesting find, more details below. Voltios beach is not the best for bathing, but you’ll find some spots that are sandy and shallow if you walk further to the left (west). If you like rock pebbles, you’ll find many along the shore. From this beach you can see sailboats in the distance approaching from Puerto Rico and Culebra. On a clear day, it’s a great place to take photos.

Most of the beach here has a rocky bottom, with the water being so clear, you’ll see much contrast on the water.

As you walk to the left side, you’ll get to a spot that that feels like a natural pool with a natural wall that serves as a barrier from the strong ocean waves, giving you a spot to do some snorkeling with water that’s clear and warm. If you really love snorkeling, we recommend Blue Beach and Mosquito Pier.

After a snorkeling swim along the wall, park under your favorite leaning palm tree and take a nap and break from the sun. Make sure you always take drinks and snacks to the beach, no waiter will come around offering you a piña colada.

What’s up with the name?
So, why is this beach named Playa Voltios (Voltage Beach)? Unfortunately this unsightly structure is necessary on the island and it is located right at the entrance of the beach. When you see it you’ll know you’re at Playa Voltios.
Treasure Hunt at Voltios Beach
Look for the electric line stretching from Vieques to sister island Culebra. Not a very inviting scene into the water… Personally I don’t swim in this water and please don’t allow your children here, there is plenty of beach to enjoy on this stretch.

This beach although not on our top of the list, it’s still worth the drive and unique indeed. Where else will you see an electric line under water that close? If you go on Google Earth, starting on the map below you can actually see the electric line going all the way to Culebra.

Directions to Voltios Beach, Vieques Island
Take PR-200 and head east, pass Isabel Segunda, and look for the electrical tower on your left. You’ll see a narrow dirt path going down towards the beach to the right of the tower, you can park there.
