My visit back in 1971

by Dave
(Maryland, USA)

In 1971 I was part of a college field study (from Brooklyn,NY), to Vieques. We studied, Marine biology, Scuba Diving, Camping and Outdoor recreation. We camped in a clearing adjacent to Playa Esperanza, used the shower facilities at SunBay Beach, Studied marine life at Mosquito Bay and Hiked to and around Caya de Afuero.

My favorite beach is probably Playa Esperanza since I spent most of my time there.

At the time, we used a place called The Sportsman House,(I think it is now The Great Escape Bed & Breakfast), as a classroom (for lectures)and training facility (for basic scuba training in the pool). We also used it for occasional breakfasts and evening visits to the bar.

I remember that very well

Wow! That was like a flashback back to about the time when Santana played at Camp Garcia. Los bilogos marinos campground by the pier at the beach in La Esperanza. Who can forget that! I was still in my teens, and it was a cool looking site to see there back then. Was kinda odd though to see then a large group of civilians "americanos" camping at the beach back then. But, I remembered you were all a friendly group of people "de afuera". Hope you all had a positive and productive experience with your study work while in the sand of our beautiful Isla Nena.
