Martineau Car Rental

This rental agency was recommended by the people whose house we were renting for the week. I would never recommend this company. First of all, they were supposed to meet us at the ferry. I called ahead to make sure they knew we were coming. I had told them numerous times that we had 6 adults, two of them over 6 feet tall. We needed a large car for all of us and our luggage. When we got to the port, they were not there right away. Luckily, our caretaker for our rental house was. A guy drove up in a Jeep with a cracked windshield and said that he was Martineau Car Rental and that he just wanted one of our group to go with him to pick up the car. They they could drive back to pick up the rest of their group. My son-in-law went with him and I followed with the caretaker in her car, realizing that he wouldn't be able to find us later, since we didn't know the town. When we got there, he was already working with the other guy he had picked up with my son-in-law. He had told me when I called that he had a Durango picked out for us, since we had so many. He gave our Durango to the first guy!! He didn't have any other big cars left. All he had were Jeeps. He didn't seem at all concerned. He said we didn't want this one since it didn't have gas, and we didn't want the other one because it didn't have something... He said that we could have a Jeep. It was all banged up. It didn't have door handles on the inside of the doors! If you wanted to get out, you had to roll down the window and open your own door from the outside. The air conditioning only had high or off. Every light on the dash was lit. Check engine, check tires, and an exclamation mark (!) like that. We couldn't all 6 go anywhere together without one of us sitting in the very back, with no seat. The house we stayed at gave us access to beach chairs, inner tubes, and ice chests, which we couldn't use, since we couldn't fit anything other than us in the car, it inhibited our stay in Vieques. It was a good thing that our caretaker went with us to get the car, because we had to put our luggage in her car, along with a couple of us, to get to the house. The owner told me to call the next day, he felt sure he would have a Durango come in. I called and he told me "no, one didn't come in", not sorry or anything. He did reduce our rental $20 a day, but that doesn't make up for what we missed doing on our trip because of the handicap of having the wrong vehicle. I don't know about the other car rental places on Vieques, but I would certainly give them a try.
