Isla de Vieques

La Isla Nena / Isla de Vieques

One of the beautiful Spanish Virgin Islands of Puerto Rico

The name Isla Nena, which translates to "little girl", is how residents of Vieques and Puerto Rico kindly call Isla de Vieques (Vieques Island).

For 62 years La Isla Nena was mainly controlled by the United States Navy and it was used for bombing practices. After many years of struggles and protests by the residents of La Isla Nena, finally the Navy moved out.

Once you visit, you may want to call our island your Isla Nena as well.

Vieques was truly like an innocent, pure little girl that was used and abused. Isla Nena still remains very fragile and beautiful. Now the struggle of Viequenses is allocating and getting back the hundreds of acres of precious land but most importantly making sure that the United States Navy cleans up any toxic waste or live ammunitions still present on the island.

Many foreigners around the world see Vieques as an opportunity to capitalize on the budding tourism. La Isla Nena is now at risk of a different type of exploitation.... which is tourism. We hope to create a haven for tourists where they can escape from the everyday world but in a way that sustains the sensitive eco-system of the island.

We invite you to visit our Isla Nena. Please treat our island with much respect and love, she is truly Puerto Rico's little girl and we love "her" very much.
