Photo Tour of Isabel II, "Capital" of Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico

Vieques Island > About Vieques Island > Isabel Segunda, Vieques

If you happen to arrive to Vieques by ferry, you would first notice Faro Punta Mulas (lighthouse) sitting at the top of the hill proudly welcoming you.

You will immediately notice the deep greens of the island accentuated with scattered colorful homes throughout and brightly painted fisherman boasts adorning the shore.

El Fortin Conde de Marisol  proudly stands at the top of the hill watching over the town. El Fortin houses a museum that tells the story of La Isla Nena, make sure you visit during your stay.

As soon as you get off the ferry Pùblico drivers (taxis) await to offer friendly services to travelers needing a ride to their destination.  The crowd around the dock when you get off the ferry, is the most people you will see at one time during your entire stay in Vieques.

When you get off the ferry, if you happen to walk around to the passengers waiting area, you may find fisherman coming back with their catch of the day and divers returning from their adventurous day in the waters. Watching this scene made me realize just how little you need to live happily.

The first thing you will see when you drive by the center of Isabel II is the charming plaza. In Puerto Rico, you will find a plaza in the center of every municipality. This is a place for friends to gather and just about every day you may find senior friends congregating to play dominoes.

Bordering the plaza there are some small shops, the town bar and “La Alcaldia” (mayor’s office).

Vieques Tourism Office, Isabel II, Vieques, Puerto RicoThe Tourism office is located right next to La Alcaldia. Stop by the office during the first days of your stay. The ladies at the desk are very friendly and informative, they will be able to answer any questions you may have and help you plan your stay.

If you take a little walk around Isabel II, you will pass by old churches with elegant doorways….
little rustic tropical gardens, bougainvillea adorning walls….
and reminders of the Navy struggles painted on walls.
Small narrow residential roads will lead to road ends with amazing views of the main island, the Atlantic shore and horses quietly grazing.
Take some time off from the beaches and get to know Isabel II in beautiful Vieques.
