A little history:
The reason you probably never heard of Isla de Vieques was because this magical island was not a popular vacation spot due to the military control of the US Navy. After years of protests the Navy finally discontinued practices and left the island on 2003. Ironically the Navy's control of two thirds of the island caused the island to remain like a live picture of the Caribbean of the Past. Since then, the locals and the rest of the world are able to enjoy the island's unending beauty in peace. For many years Isla de Vieques was a secret escape spot on the Caribbean but now the secret is out.
Where is Isla de Vieques? Isla de Vieques is part of the Islands of Puerto Rico and it's also known as one of the Spanish Virgin Islands. This beautiful island is just 6 miles off the southeast coast of Puerto Rico. You can get to Isla de Vieques in just a short ride on the
ferry or a short flight from San Juan or Ceiba.
