Vieques

I am not old enough yet to wish that I could go back in time but perhaps you remember the days when "having fun" meant much simpler things. In today's world we rely too much on technology to be entertained; visiting Vieques will make you feel as though you are going back in time, back to a time when nature and the warmth of a community takes care of every need, back to a more simple way of living, back to innocence.

If you have children I encourage to come to Vieques, this island is a vacation destination that is really conducive to some real quality family time.

If you happen to be on the island on a Sunday, come to the old pier in Esperanza. Have fun the old fashioned way and see nature at it's best. Watch the children of Vieques hour after hour jumping from the pier with nothing else on their minds. See teenage boys proudly riding their horses around the beach and taking them for a swim.

You won't find these children and teenagers playing with Gameboys, Ipods, text messaging friends, riding skateboards or fancy bikes. Many children in Vieques have their own horse and are content to play with one another while connecting with nature. It is truly beautiful and enlightening to watch their lives unfold on a Sunday afternoon at the pier. At times I sit and watch and at times I just join in the fun.

A great place to watch the kids play is right under the old Pier, it is truly like becoming a part of a beautiful natural painting that continuously moves.

If you are blessed to have children, I encourage you to leave their electronics behind. Bring them to the pier on a Sunday afternoon and just let them play with the locals so they can experience the simpler but richer side of life. Your children will have the time of their life and may come back home with a better appreciation for what they have and a better understanding for the things that really matter.

The first lesson is that we truly do not need much in life to be happy. When we take care of nature, nature takes care of us.
