Playa Negrita - Black Sand Beach
Vieques Island, Puerto Rico
Not even all the locals are aware that there is black sand on the island of Vieques, it is truly a secret beach. I am not sure if this beach has a name but for now I will call it Playa Negrita.
The coast is beautifully untamed, which is one of the reasons why people that visit the island of Vieques fall in love with this small piece of land just off the coast of Puerto Rico. The coastline of the island is still very natural and beautifully unspoiled all around just the way nature intended it to be.
Enjoy views of Cayo Afuera, the small town of Esperanza and the southern coast of the island of Vieques.
Take your sandals off, stepping foot on the sand is like walking on pitch black baby powder that sparkles with the sun.
As you walk towards Playa Negrita (Black Sand Beach) you will have to work your way around beautiful rock formations. The bottom of the beach is rocky and can get slippery so please walk with care. It may be helpful to bring your special beach sandals. No special hiking skills are necessary, individuals with average physical ability will have no problems getting there.
So how and why does Vieques have black sand? Areas on the island like Monte Pirata are volcanic and some of this beautiful volcanic material is washed down through a quebrada during heavy rains which ends up at this beach on the island. I have found some of this volcanic material atPlaya Cofi which is on the northern coast of the island.
How to get to Playa Negrita: Head towards La Hueca, which is located on the southwestern part of the island. From Esperanza head west, you will pass Casa Vieja Art Gallery on your left, slow down and start looking for a dirt road path on your left. You will see a big boulder on this dirt road. You will be driving towards the edge of a cliff, find a place to park around there. Grab your camera, your sandals, put on some sunscreen and walk down a walkway on your left. You will just walk and walk around the coast until you find the black sand beach. I was extremely desperate to get there, but do take your time, it is a beautiful walk towards the beach. As I mentioned earlier you will have to work your way around rock walls. The bottom of the beach is rocky and can get slippery so please walk around with care.
