After a long history of protests the Navy finally discontinued practices and left the island on 2003. Ironically the Navy’s control of two thirds of the island caused the island to remain like a live picture of the Caribbean of the Past. Where is Isla de Vieques?

Vieques is part of the Islands of Puerto Rico and it’s also known as one of the Spanish Virgin Islands. This beautiful island is just 6 miles off the southeast coast of Puerto Rico. You can get to Isla de Vieques in just a short ride on the ferry or a short flight from San Juan or Ceiba.
